project overview
The Metropolitan at the Riverwalk is a brand-new development that offers residents a taste of maritime elegance intertwined with contemporary comfort. The property boasts a distinct nautical theme, reflected in its interior design and echoed in the custom signage and garage mural designed by Studio 618. This project encompassed both interior and exterior signage, aiming to blend seamlessly with the multifamily building's luxurious yet playful aesthetic.
design inspiration and conceptualization
From the outset, the concept for the interior signage was clearly defined as "marine inspired." Lauren and her team embarked on a meticulous design process, drawing heavily on the elements surrounding the property. The nearby dock and Riverwalk provided endless inspiration, translating into signage that not only directs but also tells a story.
"Our approach involves deep diving into the property’s soul," Lauren notes. "For the Metropolitan, it was all about bringing the charm of the waterfront inside, making every sign an extension of the property’s identity."
creative process
Lauren's strategy involved an integrated design process, where every element was considered. "We take our time to comb through interior design renderings, furniture selections, textile patterns, and architectural details," Lauren explains. “This thoroughness ensures that the signage not only serves its functional purpose but enhances the property’s overall aesthetic.”
The nautical theme is cleverly integrated through the use of materials and motifs that reflect the maritime setting. Signage elements include ropes reminiscent of those used on ships, and layered acrylic panels that mimic the look of portholes, essential to any vessel. The color palette was directly inspired by the property's surroundings—neutral and gray tones that match the interior, punctuated with pops of color to add vibrancy and life.
fabrication and installation
Collaboration with fabricators is crucial to bring the envisioned designs to life. For the Metropolitan project, Studio 618 partnered with Duncan-Parnell for the signage and Tech Painting Co. for the garage mural. "Working with skilled artisans who understand our vision is pivotal. Duncan-Parnell and Tech Painting were instrumental in realizing the intricate details of our designs," Lauren states.
The garage mural, titled "Waterfront Waves," is a standout feature of the project. Positioned at the entrance of the parking garage, it greets residents and visitors with a wave-like pattern that captures the fluidity and dynamism of the river beside which the Metropolitan sits. This mural not only serves as a bold welcome gesture but also reinforces the property's connection to its waterfront setting.
challenges and triumphs
Every project presents its unique set of challenges, and the Metropolitan was no exception. One of the major challenges was ensuring that the signage not only matched the interior design but also complied with all regulatory signage requirements without disrupting the aesthetic flow. "Navigating these requirements while keeping the design elegant and coherent was a complex task," Lauren reflects.
Another triumph was the integration of the signage with the property's branding. The unit signs, in particular, showcase a blend of functionality and artistry, with each sign hanging from a nautically inspired rope and attached to the wall with a dimensional dark gray peg, embodying both practicality and artistic expression.
client and community impact
The response to the signage and garage graphics at the Metropolitan at the Riverwalk has been overwhelmingly positive. Residents appreciate the seamless integration of the signage with the building's theme, and visitors often comment on the playful yet sophisticated design elements. "It’s about creating an environment where both functionality and beauty coexist, enhancing everyday experiences," Lauren adds.
